Repetitive Strain Injury RSI

RSI is caused by repetitive motions, excessive force and extremes of motion. It tends to occur in those undertaking repetitive tasks such as typing, or working on a production line. Over time these motions can strain the soft tissues, reducing circulation. Tiny tears in the muscles and tendons are created, which become inflamed. In some cases it can cause permanent tissue damage and disability. If the damage is caused by an employer's neglect of health and safety regulations then a repetitive strain injury compensation claim can be started by an RSI solicitor.

Symptoms may take months, even years, to appear. Symptoms include pain, swelling, and stiffness of the wrist, elbow or small joints in the hand. At first, symptoms occur only after prolonged activity and cease when the activity stops. But as damage progresses, the pain does not go away even after rest.

For computer users RSI can result from poorly designed workstations with keyboards too high, ill-fitting chairs, stressful conditions, extended hours of typing and using a mouse.

Others at risk include: assembly-line workers, warehouse workers, drivers, garment workers, athletes, meat and poultry processors, painters, writers, gardeners, carpenters, bank tellers, data entry clerks, accountants, bricklayers, secretaries, construction workers, draftsmen, checkout clerks and anyone else who uses their hands continually or forcefully.

Treatment may include painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs, heat and cold packs, elastic wrist supports or firm wrist splints, acupuncture and physiotherapy.

If your employer has failed in their duty of care to provide and maintain a working environment that is safe to your health, then you may be entitled to instruct an RSI solicitor to make a repetitive strain injury compensation claim. You will receive damages for your injuries and disabilities, pain and suffering, medical treatment expenses, physiotherapy and pharmaceutical expenses and loss of earnings.

Repetitive strain injury (RSI) which is also known as Occupational Overuse Syndrome, Work-related Upper Limb Injury, Isometric Contraction Myopathy, Cumulative Trauma Disorder (CTD) and Repetitive Motion Syndrome (RMS) is used by RSI solicitors as an umbrella term to refer to various kinds of work-related musculoskeletal injuries such as:

  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • tendonitis
  • tenosynovitis
  • bursitis
  • epicondylitis
  • osteoarthritis
  • rheumatoid arthritis
